So fast. So very fast. It seems like just yesterday that my misfortunate accident last Christmas Eve had me in bed with 3 broken ribs and of all things to accompany that, the flu. Just anticipating the next cough or sneeze had me in the worst physical agony I'd ever experienced. So I ended up spending the Holidays (and all of January) by myself in bed. And in so doing, I had the chance - with few other choices, to think of the Holidays and what it's all about. Being the cock-eyed optimist that I am (don't even THINK about it, Ken...), I came away with some comforting thoughts.
The car. How marvelous is the car. From a mere thought to concept, then from crafting to reality. Think about it. The car is one of the most incredible inventions ever conceived. Each and every part carefully planned and created to perform a specific task - all coming together to form a most amazing machine. It is the result of careful thought, great planning and hard work. Is it possible that without humans... that the car could have sprung into existence by itself? Of course. All the elements that go into creating a car are right here on Earth. All that would have to happen is for them to swirl around, bumping into each other for eons until they all manage to come together collectively forming a Lincoln Mark VII, with power windows, Moon Roof, leather interior, a killer engine and a beautiful maroon, clear-coat finish. Simple.
Of course that's silly. So why is the human mechanism any different? Think about THAT. Each and every part carefully planned and created to perform a specific task - all coming together to form a most amazing machine. It is the result of careful thought, great planning and hard work. Bio-mechanical, but mechanical none the less. The very thought that the Human Being is just some cosmic accident is just as silly and completely arrogant. And not just Humans, but all life. The complexity goes so far beyond human thinking that it's ridiculous to even try. So why do we even attempt to come to a conclusion - the very BIGGEST conclusion of all regarding our existence? The Human Being is simply not capable of thinking in such terms. The answers to the Universe are obviously way beyond us. And yet we argue about it, and even go to war and kill each other over it.
What each of us is doing here and where we go from here is anyone's guess and definitely another blog. My point here is that this whole cosmic thing could have very easily gone on without you. But it didn't. You are here. So while you are, no matter what religion or what your faith if any, take some time during the Holidays to look up into the night sky at all the wonder. Put away any arrogance and think about how amazing you are in mind, body and spirit. Then, thank whoever or whatever is out there for creating YOU - The Most Incredible Invention of all Time.
Thank you so very much for reading and of course, may all of you find peace, love and happiness during this wonderful time of year.
Merry Christmas and Wishes for a Great New Year - and beyond,
Chris
